HAPPY NEWS YEARS!
-ryandgreat, cebu capitol
happy news year! this is good for a time to look back at the last two years that have gone so quickly
where i spent my days mostly at field work for news! in my office, our broadcast van,
while covering the most important news of the day
i am incredibly fortunate and grateful that finally, i am in the news field! after many attempts since college! and i felt i'm exactly where i wanted to be
i'm an enthusiast in things concerning the news production
i grew up watching saksi, tv patrol, the world tonight and frontpage: ulat ni mel tiangco and i'm an avid follower
i am more inclined to think, read and write about news and i find news as engaging because it's serious and it tackle social issues that affects our lives

i started my tv career in 2006 but the only opportunity that's available then are for entertainment programs
my application was for a news writer or production assistant post for the newly reformatted tv5 under the management of manny v. pangilinan in january 2010,
but it was in may 2011 that i got a call back and was given a different offer,
not as news writer or production assistant but primarily for a field work as field producer for news!
what's that? was my initial reaction so i thought that i'll be working with a reporter in writing and producing a news story,
but lo and behold! it's more on the holistic point of view pala of the production of a news story!
and more on the technical aspect of the news package, the video editing, producing and directing of a live report
i've been involve in a live tv production through the longest-running noontime show eat... bulaga! for three years!
but i do not have the editing skills as well as i didn't exactly relish the thought of being a director and seat and call the shots!
the difference between news and entertainment is it's in short form and quick as compare to documentaries or teleserye and all
i'm also fascinated with eng van! or electronic news gathering van since i was 9!
i first saw one during the papal visit on january 1995 at luneta and then on january 2001 during edsa dos
so it was actually the advent of technology that made me want to do this and i also wanted to learn more of it
we work for long hours everyday because we have number of newscasts for channel 5 and channel 41 and on-line, that we must be ready to service them all
aside from the tremendous responsibilities and physical stress that we go through, for beating the deadlines (buzzer beater)
this work has all the disadvantages in the world!
most of the news stories that we cover are depressing!
from crime stories about rape abuse, drug syndicate, murder, vehicular accident to everyday traffic, flood, devastation and political circus!
and there are many personal sacrifices that comes within,
it's like on a military mission but on a smaller scale,
we go from one point to another in a day and being away from home for days and weeks
and in news, there are no holidays! and there were many holidays that i wasn't able to celebrate because of work
that's the life and the things that i've to live and accept since i've chosen to be in this industry,
i just bear in mind that the public counts on us so much during this time

and the only perks that we can get on holidays, and i look forward is the annual tv appearance!

but on a personal note, the last two years had held some memorable experiences to me and here are some of the highlights:
on 16th december 2011, my team scored an exclusive video of ex-president gloria macapagal-arroyo at the veterans memorial medical center,
where we stakeout at the back of the hospital for two weeks!
cgma was transferred to a detention facility inside the veterans memorial center on 2nd december
and then i nearly going to spend my christmas 2011 at work but thankfully we finished hours before 12mn
so i came home to celebrate christmas with my family
however i spent the whole last day of 2011 and the whole first day of 2012 at work and until the second day of 2012
and because of the nature of our work, we get to many places unexpectedly and at the most inconvenient of time!
my very first out-of-town assignment came unexpectedly, when we just had a news coverage for the morning newscast that i received a call to go to masbate!
it was damaged by an earthquake on 6th march,
a private plane safely transported us to masbate! and i think that made my first out-of-town assignment special to me!
followed by a northern road trip challenge were we've gone through nueva vizcaya, isabela, ifugao, baguio and pampanga!
our main news story was the ambush of 11 soldiers who were allegedly killed by npa members in ifugao
our first stop at the headquarters of the 5th infrantry division of philippine army at campo melchor dela cruz in gamu, isabela
for the necrological services for the slain soldiers
it was a day of mourning for the families of the victims
and the investigation was in full swing at ifugao and it's inevitable that we have to go! to ifugao! from isabela

and the investigation was in full swing at ifugao and it's inevitable that we have to go! to ifugao! from isabela
and baguio city served as our last stop, where there's a report that baguio runs out of water supply and we headed back to manila right after the labor day!
and the most memorable part of that road trip was the challenging route from ifugao to baguio that took more than 8 hours of land travel

one of the important news coverage every year is the feast of nazareno in quiapo and quirino grandstand
i witnessed, for the first time, the actual 'traslacion' of Poong Nazareno from quirino granstand to quiapo church
that lasted for almost 24 hours! and this year i got the chance to see and touch the Poong Nazareno on its feast day
these past two years, our country was strikingly the thoroughfare of storm and the outcome demonstrated what's climate change is all about!
on this occasion, our job is to monitor the weather forecast and to brave the heavy rains and floods wherever, whenever and at any circumstances
but there's a glimmer hope amid all the bad news, after the storm comes the story of triumph as we find so much consolation in victory!

sports stories that often disguise itself as symbol of hope especially in times of trouble that brings so much pride and joy to our nation
we've covered some national and international sports event most especially during pacquiao's boxing fight and the azkals attempt to world cup!
and during pba and ncaa's finals
i've seated for good long hours in my chair for a livestreaming of trade launch, grand launching, interviews and seminars
i am also fortunate to have work with young and talented people
where we shared so many laughter and tears from our related day-to-day challenges at work
we don't compete with each other instead we are ready to lend a helping hand for one another, we treat each other equally, no one should go above or below
we went through a painful process under most trying circumstances of fear and distrust
but we found and shared sweet victory because of our support for each other

and lastly, i take so much pride and joy for this job, more than the many sacrifices i've done as well as putting in hours and days,
there's nothing like there to witness major events unfold and become part of our history, while i also enjoy the adrenaline rush that goes within
and i guess it takes focus and passion and drive to continue and survive the uncertainty of this news life! happy news year!
