this held an extra-ordinary work experience for me!

on 6th december, i went straight  from airport to senate of the philippines! that was literally means from vacation to work!

coming from my weekend in guangzhou, china wearing same clothes and all

i worked for the airing of morning senate briefings and hearings and an unexpected live interview of senator manny pacquiao!

i've always wanted to meet senator manny pacquiao up-close! but not on that day! hinde pa ako naligo! hahaha

and that same thing happened to me during senator dick gordon's interview on 14th december!

i'm slightly under the weather that day and again hinde pa ako naligo! hahaha

of the last years that i've covered weather forecasts at pagasa for its typhoon updates!

time magazine described the philippines as the most exposed country in the world to tropical storms

most frequently hit by typhoon are those areas of northern luzon and eastern visayas

the classifications of typhoons varies depending on the maximum sustained wind described

tropical disturbance - or low pressure area
tropical depression  - 55kph sustained winds
tropical storm - - up to 120kph sustained winds
typhoon - 120kph and above sustained winds

no super typhoon category then, until after the most destructive typhoon to hit the country

on november 2013, we were caught off guard by yolanda! the super typhoon that caused a massive destruction to visayas area

i remember so well, i was part of the news team that will be sent there few days before its landfall

together with our news crew, news reporter gerard garcia and news anchor erwin tulfo

they all went to leyte except myself, that turns out a blessing in disguise on my end, because i would have died there

our news team, just like most of the journalists that were sent there, was at the death's door, during their live news coverage

that they all would not want to look back and risked their lives while covering the onslaught of the super typhoon yolanda,

where storm surges caused massive destruction to lives and properties of more than thousands



and fast forward to 2015, when pagasa introduced another cyclone warning and category

and revised the classification adding super typhoon as well as public storm signal number 5

tropical depression - at least 61kph
tropical storm - up to 88kph
severe tropical storm - up to 117kph
typhoon - up to 220kph
super typhoon - at least 220kph


signal number 1 - 30 to 60kph
signal number 2 - 61 to 120kph
signal number 3 - 121 to 170 kph
signal number 4 - 171 to 220kph
signal number 5 - 220kph or more

the revision came after yolanda and the threat to possibly more strong typhoons in the future

and also this is to escalate sense of urgency among local communities to respond appropriately to threats of approaching storm

and for the first time in history, pagasa declared a storm signal number 5 on 19th october this year! the highest tropical cyclone warning signal!

posed a serious threat to the northern part of luzon and under signal number 5, the northern province of cagayan and isabela

lawin has maximum winds of up to 225kph and gustiness of up to 315kph

on 19th october, my news team headed to isabela and cagayan, by land travel!

on our way there, at nueva ecija, we've experienced powerful winds!

monitoring reports from radio and twitter and advisories from our news desk, given its massive strength and intensity

we've decided to take it slow and easy as we brace ourselves for the impact of super typhoon lawin!

it was a sunny afternoon when we arrived at isabela capitol! late noon of 20th october, but the aftermath welcomed our team!

toppled trees and posts, here and there and several destruction

we aired a back-to-back live report for the primetime newscast aksyon,

dindo flora summarized stories from cagayan while renz ongkiko summarized stories from isabela

there were no casualties reported! the preemptive evacuation of its local government works so well! that ensured safety to thousands of residence

but damages to land and other properties caused billions!

it was only in 2013 that i first met him in person

i don't know if he could still recall that we're on the same table

during lunch break at the focap of pnoy in manila hotel around october of 2013

it was a brief encounter and we have not spoken and after that we hardly see each other during news coverage, 

and the only time that we did and we spent lot of time together

was during a week-long senate hearings on july 2014,

where our work station was just apart

i introduced myself to him not as someone from the competition

but someone that has consistently reading his blog posts

and that has inspired me in some ways

he even featured me on his blog right after that fateful day at mrt pasay on augsust 2014,

that's when he witnessed my most immersive experience as participant rather than a news producer

hence i was allowed to a 3 days off! before the preps for the first state of the nation address coverage of pdu30!

and since i'm holding on to that precious three-days off! i'm extremely happy that i was able to spend it the way i want it!

my first time in hk was on march of 2009, second was on november of 2013, third was on september of 2014 and last was just a year ago! on may of 2015!

and since i'm on my 5th visit to hk i already have a sense of what to expect

the lively night market, the harbour view, the theme park, the symphony of lights, those neon signs! and the entire cityscape that i truly love!

yes perhaps to just revisit those tried and tested spots! and or visiting some hk "hidden treasure" and some interesting place that i've never seen!

and what made this hong kong adventure extra special is the presence of my peyborit pren of all time!

and i promised him that i'll be his tour guide for the rest of our trip!

julius arrived in hk a day ahead of me and he just stayed at the hotel until i arrived the following day!

i took the first flight to hk on 7th july and arrived at around 7am! went straight to the hotel, did a quick change

and we headed off first to citygate outlet! at the tung chung station of mrt!

we then proceeded to that much-awaited part of the day! that's hong kong disneyland resort! and it's my 3rd time!

we did few rides!, the big grizzly mountain, mystic manor, hyperspace mountain, toy soldier parachute and rc racer at the toy kingdom land!

some activities include wild west photo fun, strolling at garden of wonders and the tarzan tree house

and then the compulsory meet and greet with mickey mouse and stopped for a quick lunch!

for the most  part, we just skipped all the musicals, we spent half of the day in long queue under the heat of the sun!

we've concluded our disneyland adventure at the finale parade of lights and fireworks display!

our 2nd day was pretty much laid-back! we went on a night stroll at the mongkok shopping district

and went up to sky100!

located at the international commerce center building in austin road, kowloon, few meters away from the kowloon station of hk mtr! 

standard ticket costs 168 hkd upon purchase on the ticket booth

we enjoyed a breath-taking panoramic view of the magnificent hong kong by night!

and on our last day in hk, we spent the day strolling at the diamond hill park, situated a lovely oasis in the midst of the bustling metropolis!

and a short-walk at the mid-escalator section of central in hk!

needless to say that i spent my summer vacation in hong kong on its summer season!

as i finish writing this post, allow me to greet my hong kong buddy! my peyborit pren celebrating his birthday!

the official race to malacanan started as early as last year!

the starting line, was the filing of candidacy at the main office of comelec in intramuros, manila

and then, the actual race was the start of campaign season

and the finish line, op cors! was the official canvassing and results of votes!

and now that results are in and the run has been completed,

allow me to take you running backwards, to the race of 2016 national elections!

i only highlight those that i've personally witnessed and covered

comelec launched Pili Pinas as the official theme of the 2016 National Elections on 11th october of 2015

i was in-charged for the daily news content requirements for tv5, aksyontv and bloombergtv philippines from 11th to 15th October

maricel halili summarized all the news stories and presented it live for aksyon newscasts with news anchor erwin tulfo  

on it's first day, on 12th october, there were total 19 presidential aspirants! who went to file their candidacy, 

the only prominent on that list was the vp jojo binay that showed up early with his running mate senator gringo honasan
strangely enough, that in this entire process, there were overflowing of personalities that add more color and spice!

a mix of the unknown and the well-known!

it's no secret that it's way too difficult to mount a nationwide campaign! 

but no joke! there were those unknown that seriously would like to pursue their aspirations to become the next philippine president!

there were proportional numbers of those "habitual filers" that came to comelec to bid for that highest position in the government

in layman's term, we call them the nuisance candidates!

do you remember eddie gil? he was once a presidential candidate on 2004 national elections

for this election year, i can only remember manuel roxas, ooooooops! not the dilg secretary and mr. korina sanchez

he's the namesake of presidential candidate mar roxas!

he's manuel antonio roxas, but he has withdrawn his candidacy days later! seyeng nemen!!!

on the other hand, throughout the week a number of celebrities came to comelec!

only to support their family members! angel locsin in support of his relative that runs for senator, congressman nerrie colminares

tanya garcia in full support for his husband mark lapid for filling his candidacy for senate, accompanied too by his father, senator lito lapid

susan roces accompanied her daughter grace poe while chiz escudero with his lovely escort, his wife, heart evangelista

tito sotto and alma moreno who were both running for senate, were also accompanied by their celebrity family members, 

helen gamboa for tito sen and valdolph, wynwyn marquez for lovely ness!

the star for all season, i love her! ate vi!!! was in full support for his husband senator ralph recto


as well as the nega star, the ex-tv5 talent, tita shawie!!! was in full support for her husband kiko pangilinan

and on the last day of filling of candidacy, comelec chairman andres bautista expressed his gratitude to everyone

especially to the members of media, for its cooperation in that week-long, grueling, kick-off for the 2016 national elections

moving forward  to the actual race, the election campaign fever!!!!

9th february was the date! or basically, 90 days before the day of election!

but before that, presidential candidates held kick-off as early as october 2015

senator miriam defensor-santiago had her kick-off party at UP diliman

on the official campaign season, we're assigned to cover the proclamation rally of presidential candidate rody duterte

and his running mate  senator alan peter cayetano held at the street somewhere in tondo, manila,

i produced broadcast and on-line content for the livestreaming through www.bilangpilipino.com as well as live tweets for updates

the election turn-out was incredibly high!

according to comelec, at least 80 percent of the total registered voters has cast their votes!

there were also controversies during the election week!

and the comelec had consistently denied any election fraud 

although smartmatic representatives came to defend a "minor change" on the hashcode script, during the canvassing of the votes

that puts doubt on the credibility of the turn-out of the election

senator bongbong marcos and mmda chairman francis tolentino,

has already expressed their plans to file protests! for the vp and senatorial count respectively!

after all was said and done, our new leaders will be proclaimed next month!

my take on, this was the 3rd time that i was involved in the national elections!

the entire election process has leveled-up! and the it has advanced, in terms of technology!

although there are some aspect that needs improvement

and every comments from all sides, seems to matter! i've never seen or heard so much public engagement!

most especially on-line! that there were even heated discourse among netizens!

after all, that's how democracy works!
