SULYAP SA BUHAY PAGKATAPOS NG UNOS
-ryandgreat, espana, manilaallow me to highlight some of the most memorable experiences while doing this documentary!
whuile on it, there were other requirements to fulfill like thesis writing, tv production class and memorizing communication theories
***pre production
-we're asked to do a documentary of 10-12 minutes
-the topic selection process in of itself was challenging!
-we're told to come up and create an original concept because we wouldn’t want to be a copy-cat version of i-witness (that by the way i've been watching it since 1999)
-for the grouping, we cannot choose who we wanted to work with and it's deliberately that the selection of members should be in random order
-then the creative development process began! we're given a day to complete the task or we’ll get zero mark
-listed topics are: rail transit, sim card syndication and coral reefs
-and then i saw a magazine
-on its front cover the devastated quezon province that was hit by a typhoon last december 2004

2005 | Elim Magazine |
at first they do not want it because we do not have enough resources
but we proceeded and it was approved right away!
but then again, there were certain apprehensions whether we can do it or not, we hardly knew anyone from quezon province
***production stage
-we went there on 12th february,
-we hired a tricycle driver for a day
- i brought the magazine and asked the driver if he could drop us there, showing him that picture
-and from that point, we didn't know where exactly to go,
-we also asked him to accompany us around most especially to the affected areas
-first stop was at repador, many have died in that place, it's a commercial establishment ruined due to flash floods
one of the most touching feature story on tv, a child who survived after several days under a collapsed building
and then we met ka pidong, a charcoal seller, who lives nearby seashore, we asked him to narrate his experiences during the calamity
while doing the interview, we thought we've already found the case study and subject matter our documentary
right after the interview, we gave ka pidong and his family some of our old stuff, and canned goods to provide a temporary aid for them
the following day, we presented the entire raw materials to class,
but the assessment is to re-shoot the entire interview because of the poor audio quality
so we went back the following week on a bad weather condition,
when we got there we started to shoot right away but apparently we have encountered a major problem,
rocky unintentionally left my tripod on the van, of course we need the tripod for the interview,
we spent 45 minutes going to infanta in search for it then went back to real without tripod
we've had hard time doing the task all over again, the transcription of the first interview was too good already,
i mean the emotion was raw and the first shoot was well documented
we have the same questions for ka pidong but we got an entirely different response so its like we're coaching him based on the transcriptions on-hand
and still hoping it would translate great on tv
and then comes the writing of the first draft of script and video research
we used my 24 Oras video footages (from my thesis) to establish the background of the story
it was highly recommended that we ought to use our own footage instead of using a file video
but that's impossible because we do not have those footage so we have rely on whatever available resources
***post production
-we started editing at 12 noon at rico's pad,
-rico and rocky manning the final edit until 10am of the following day while i monitor the flow and the script
-ada did the voice-over narration
-the following assessment after we had the final edit was pleasing,
-comments we've heard from prens, that it has great production value because of great editing and it was timely
-on final edit, they wanted us to replace gma-7's file videos
-for the reason that our documentary might one of the entries to abc-5’s dokyu
of course it would be great to see our work on national tv but our consensus, to keep the final edit as it is
i am very satisfied with the result. one of the highlights of my college life having done that
i am also blessed to have worked with people who showed passion and interest and commitment to this

focusing on a family who were very much affected by the effects of the aftermath, featuring Vela Cruz family headed by Ka Pidong who tells his stories and their struggles during the incident of typhoon and how they live life and how they adjust with so many changes
realizing that Mother Nature is the most dreadful monster of all and that there is no genius creation can ever avoid and withstand it
for the makers of this documentary this is a reality check. Looking back on what happened may be a lesson learned and wake up call to all of us to refrain from abusing Mother Nature and to strengthen our faith in God
